 SIZING STERLING SILVER  RINGS
Resizing a sterling ring is more difficult than doing the same with a ring made of gold.  This is because of the great and wonderful way silver conducts heat.  Silver is a wonderful conductor and is used in electronics, etc. for these properties.  However, in jewelry work, quick conductance of heat is problematic.   First of all,  if the ring must have a piece cut out, be rejoined and soldered back together at a smaller size or if a piece must be added to make the ring larger,  when heating the ring to make the solder flow properly the entire ring will become very hot.  With gold the job may be done quickly since heat does not travel so quickly away from the torch flame.  With silver, the heat is moved through the metal quickly, heating the entire ring and more heat is needed to make the solder flow.   Why is this a problem?  First of all, the jeweler must protect the stone (if sensitive to heat).    Secondly, the entire ring must be refinished since the heating will bring a discoloration to the entire piece.    The stone may be protected by immersing it in water while a large and very hot flame is used to heat the sizing area and flow the solder.  The bright or patina (darkened) finish of the ring must be reapplied since the heat will remove much of it.     Some jewelers will not size sterling silver rings for these very reasons.   Please consider the size when purchasing a sterling silver ring.  We DON'T resize sterling rings, so purchase with true size in mind.
